Home Chef is kind of fun!

As mentioned before, my sister put in my email so I could get $30 off a trial of Home Chef. I knew she and her hubby were having a good time trying out Blue Apron and liked the looks of this one. I liked the food options too and decided to try it. The box showed up via FedEx on Friday (didn't have to be there) and it's packed full of ice gel packs so everything stays cool enough until you get home.

Tonight I made the Thai Fish Cakes (recipe here) and boy they turned out so good! Since the recipes are intended for two people, I have the leftovers in the fridge for tomorrow and it is portioned nicely. Pictures behind the cut:

The finished product! I even did the silly smear of sauce like you see at the fancy frou frou places. The only changes I made to the recipe is to use about 1/3 of the chili powder (it did mention "to taste") and I'm glad I did since it also came with siracha to add and if I added all the spice powder, it would've been too much. Also, there was a LOT of slaw in that pouch and 3/4 of a lime and some olive oil didn't feel like quite enough to dress the slaw so I tossed in a couple of slugs of Trader Joe's Asian Peanut Dressing.

I'm quite pleased with the results and really like how things are all right there for you. I can also see myself getting the ingredients to make it on my own sometime. One thing that I hadn't bought before and wondered about was the fish sauce that was added to the cakes. I'll have to pick some of that up at the Asian grocery.

I'm looking forward to the next recipe which I might post for fun. My sister even called me when I posted these to FB to say how yummy it looks and how much fun it is. If you're considering it, let me know for a $30 off promo.

I'm hoping that this will eventually cause less food waste which will save me money in the long term.

I don't mind a bit of spice and I'm sure my foodie friends on FB think I'm a wimp for only adding a fraction of the chili seasoning. And this was so much easier to make than I had expected. I'm actually shocked about that.

LOL, yeah, I've got foodie friends, too, who turn up the heat and think I'm a wimp. So what? Like I told them, I don't like the sensation of a burning tongue and my gut will punish me for days after, so why would I risk that? I have so many food allergies and sensitivities, they've learned that it's better just to enjoy their food while I continue to eat very bland, and very safe foods and recipes. Hell, I have to do the low salt thing and that's a real pain. I also can't have seafood, peanuts, cooked tomato products, or even green tea. It can be a real challenge to eat out, let me tell you.
