Vintage photos

These were sent to my Mom from her first cousin Paulette on her Mom's side. Mom has seen none of these before and many of them are so old that she doesn't know the people in the pictures. But they're still cool from being so old. There are no dates on these but I'll take some guesses based on ages of people I have in the family tree. My own commentary is in italics

First I'll post the group shots:
Going by the estimated age if that is my aunt Marie in the first photo, these next three photos would likely be late 1930s.

From what I can decipher from the old lady scribble on the back of the photo
From right - Unknown, Grandpa Hudec (my step great grandfather, John Hudec), Mrs Petrovich, Caroline Kubene, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown girl, Rose Kelco (my grandmother), Rosemarie Kelco (my aunt Marie)
Seated in black - Mrs Kubene?, Possibly Rose Hudec (My great grandmother), Little girl Irene Petrovich

Back Row
3rd from left - Mrs Petrovich
5th from left - Mrs Kubene
6th from left - Grandpa Hudec (my step great grandfather, John Hudec)
On right (I have no idea where she's starting since this doesn't make sense) - Mom (Paulette's mother Mary Gregorsok), Rosemarie (my aunt) Aunt Rose (My grandmother), Dad (Paulette's Dad, my great uncle Julius Kelso)
Grandma Hudec in chair, light dress holding flowers (my great grandmother)

This one I'm not even going to try to figure out who is who, just transcribing the writing on the back:
4th from left, Rose holding Rosemary
3 from right - Grandma Hudec then Grandpa Hudec, before G & G I think they are Caroline Kubene & maybe on left might be a brother to ?, Al Kubene, Caroline's brother
Man on left could be Al Kubene and his wife

Not going to go through all of the estimated names - the only people she guessed that I'll point out is the woman in the black suit and white shirt in the back is likely my grandma Rose, the girl in the light dress on the far left may be my mom.
My guess is that this picture is from sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Note the flag with 48 stars

The woman with the white spot obscuring her face is my grandma Rose (1917-2007), the woman sitting and stuffing her face is my Mom, Nancy, born 1938, the guy in profile on the left is some guy that dated my grandmother for some time named John Strohm, the guy in the suit is my great Uncle Julius Kelso, the girl standing in the back is Aunt Marie, the gir in the white top sitting next to her is my (half) Aunt Pat, the girl with her back to us is Mom's cousin Mary Helen and the cute little girl standing facing the camera is Mom's cousin Paulette.

The girl in the front is Paulette and the blonde getting freaked out by Santa is someone named Marilyn. The girl in back looking at the camera is my Mom so guessing by her age and Paulette's age, this is probably sometime in the mid-1950s

L-R, My half aunt Pat, my aunt Marie, my Mom, Nancy. Pat was born in 1941 so this must be mid 1940s

My great uncle Julius and my grandmother Rose. Grandma was born in 1917, her real dad died in 1919 and her Mom remarried and moved to Iowa for some years. Going by estimated age, this must be in Iowa

My grandmother Rose and my Aunt Rosemarie. Guessing about 1937 in the Cleveland Ohio area

My great grandmother born Rozalia Czikrai and my grandmother Rose. My guess is 1918.

My great-grandfather Martin Kelco who died in 1919. I'm curious about the significance of the outfit.

Nice photos!
The last one of your great grandfather in the unusual outfit: I think he is holding a trowl and a mason's flat thing for holding mortar (it has a name, but I can't remember it.) He is also wearing what looks like a fancy ceremonial apron. I'm going to guess he is a Freemason and wearing his lodge regalia.

Alternatively, he is ruler of some small Balkan country and you are really the Archduchess Diane of Somewherenoonehaseverheardofandcouldnotpronounceanyway.

I was wondering about whether it was a trowel.

Heh, this is the poor as dirt side. Not likely to be a princess

When my buddy Emily looked at it, she didn't think the costume was quite right for a freemason. She was wondering whether it was some sort of holiday-related outfit (like one of the Three Kings) since he has his one hand on a sword.

A holiday costume is a possibility too. Or what might the traditional ethnic costume for special occasions like marriage or holidays have been?

Omg--I can see you in your great grandmother's eyes (Rozalia's)! These are AMAZING!

...Do you come from kings?? *lol*

Where from?
I'm curious, having not dug into posts of yours other than this. Where is your family from? We may be related.

RE: Where from?
This side of my family lived in the Cleveland Ohio area but are originally Slovak. John Hudec was my great grandmother’s second husband and together they had Stephen and Andrew. John’s first marriage had John Jr and Samuel so I’m not biologically related to them. They also lived in Iowa back in the early 1920s before moving to Ohio.

Have you taken any DNA tests on ancestry.com, 23andme or FamilyTreeDNA? I have tested on all three. 🙂
